Gisella Tomasini was born in Busto Arsizio, Italy, on February 17, 1976. She graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 at Politecnico di Milano and she received a Ph. D. in Applied Mechanics in 2005. On February 2005, she became researcher at Politecnico di Milano, Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Industrial Engineering of Politecnico di Milano.
From 2016 she is professor of ‘Fondamenti di meccanica teorica e applicata’ (Theorical and applied mechanics), from 2010 to 2016, she was professor for the course ‘Dinamica e controllo dei sistemi meccanici’ (Dynamics and control of mechanical systems).
Author of about 110 scientific papers (more than 20 on international journals), she participated to different international research projects, i.e. AOA (Aerodynamic in Open Air), WEATHER (Wind Early Alarm system for Terrestrial transportation, FP6-SME-2004).
The research activity is mainly focused on the aerodynamics of rail vehicles. In particular she studied the interaction between infrastructure and railway vehicle (slip-stream of railway vehicles, overpressure in tunnel, ballast projection) and the cross-wind effects on road and rail vehicles by means of experimental field tests, wind tunnel tests on reduced scale models and numerical analysis. Moreover, in this last years, she studied the design and the test of energy harvesting systems for wireless sensor nodes, based specifically on vibrational and eolic sources. Other research topics are the fluid-structure interaction on buildings, the vehicle dynamics and the cross wind risk analysis for railway lines.
Within the POLIMI Quality Service, she is responsible for the laboratory for the aerodynamic field tests on railway vehicles, which are accredited in accordance with TSI standard (TSI HS LOCPAS, 2014) by Accredia - Italian National Accreditation Body.
