MULTITOOL - CoMbined CO₂ captUre and reduction to methane in compact dual functionaL reacTors with cellular structured Internals for inTensified heat and mass transpOrt: from labOratory to bench scaLe

The MULTITOOL project falls within the framework of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies aimed at mitigating CO₂ emissions from energy and industrial processes. Its goal is to develop a process platform capable of combining CO₂ capture by adsorption with its catalytic conversion into methane via the methanation reaction, using hydrogen from renewable sources. The strategy is based on structured reactors and adsorbers equipped with highly conductive cellular internals, designed to enhance heat transfer, reduce pressure drops and enable operation under cyclic conditions.

A part of the project concerns the development, design and thermo-mechanical characterization of metallic cellular structures with high thermal conductivity, manufactured by additive processes. The cell geometry is optimized to achieve a favourable combination of thermal conductivity and mechanical properties, compatible with transport requirements and structural integrity constraints under cyclic thermal and mechanical loading. On the basis of finite element simulations, two topologies have been selected for a dedicated experimental campaign including monotonic tensile tests and high-temperature fatigue tests. The experimental and numerical results will provide design criteria and fatigue life diagrams specifically tailored for cellular materials to be employed as internals in compact reactors for CO₂ capture and conversion.
