Machine and Vehicle Design
Machine and Vehicle Design
The professors of the Machine and Vehicle Design Research Line belong to the disciplinary scientific sector "Mechanical Design and Machine Construction" IIND-03/A. The group's expertise focuses on advanced methodologies for the design and assessment of machine elements, structural components, and mechanical systems with applications across different platforms (transportation, aeronautics, energy, defence, health, space, etc.). The research activities developed by the group members, through collaborations with companies, universities, and national and international research centres, focus on:
- computational and experimental approaches aimed at determining the stress/strain state of components;
- advanced methodologies for evaluating structural integrity based on modelling of mechanical behaviour in service (fatigue, wear, creep, etc.) and under extreme loads;
- innovative technologies for non-destructive testing, structural monitoring, and prognostics of materials, components, and structures;
- experimental tests and optimisation of vehicles and their components, also through a driving simulator;
- design with innovative materials, composite materials, metamaterials, bio-inspired materials, and "green design";
- applications of artificial intelligence to structural design. Research topics are integrated with teaching activities through student participation in experimental and design laboratories, integrated into the courses offered by the section.
